I was a vegetarian for years. One reason I was a vegetarian, and not a vegan, is because vegan cooking is so far out of the realm of the cooking tradition I grew up in. How do you cook vegan and stay healthy? It seemed impossible.
Then covid came along and I suddenly had time to do some real research. It turns out that eating healthy and being a vegan aren’t just a possible combination: it’s actually a match made in heaven. In other words: being a vegan is actually the best way to eat healthy. Only two things to remember: avoid processed foods and do supplement with vitamin B12.
The books that helped me change my mind are ‘How not to Die’ and ‘How not to diet’ by Michael Greger. And yes, he created matching cookbooks too.
Vegan cooking is a challenge – even in today’s world with soy products available almost everywhere. And isn’t that the point? ALMOST everywhere? So, for your vegan friends – or your meat eating ones to give them a tip on what to serve you – some (Christmas) gift ideas: some of the best vegan cookbooks of all time! I’ve focused on quick and easy recipes, the kind I have a chance of making myself.
I’ve been a happy vegan for over a year now. I have more energy than I can remember having as an adult. My skin issues have decreased and my bowel movements are great. Can you guess what’s coming: my new favorite cookbook is the ‘Fiber Fueled Cookbook‘ by another doctor: Will Bulsiewicz.
The great thing about this cookbook is not that it’s vegan. It’s that it helps people with food sensitivities work back healthy foods (fruit, vegetables, whole grains, beans, lentils, nuts and seeds) into their diet. As Dr. B. likes to say: your gut is like a muscle: you can improve it by training it gradually. So if you’re unhappily avoiding healthy and tasty foods because you can’t handle them, this is the book for you. You don’t have to become a vegan in order to enjoy this book. You can just gradually increase your plant-food intake.
The book includes explanations on what’s going on in your gut and a step by step plan to help you figure out your issues and deal with them.
But what I like most about the Fiber Fueled Cookbook is that it contains recipes I would love to make for family and friends. It’s one thing to eat healthy when I’m just cooking for myself. It’s quite something else to cook vegan, healthy and tasty for guests. This cookbook will help me do that. And I am looking forward to making the sweets in here as well.
Oh, and the fermentation section looks excellent as well – and that’s saying something. I own half a dozen fermentation cookbooks – and still the few fermentation recipes in here are a great addition.
Even if you’re here looking for a vegan cookbook merely to get some variety in your cuisine – these cookbooks will be a definite addition to your kitchen library. Some are even available on kindle.

Aside from creating recipes that will make vegans and omnivores mouths water, she also gives tips on how to save as much money as possible in your kitchen:

Suitable for beginners as well as experienced cooks.
This book is clearly meant for beginner cooks. It includes a whole section on ‘Preparation basics’. This section involves an overview of ingredients often used in the book: from legumes and nuts to tempeh and noodles. That’s good, because one audience for 30 minute recipes is obviously students who are cooking for the first time and want to stay vegan while doing so.
The kinds of recipes you’ll find cover all the basics. From smoothies and snacks to breakfast, salads, soups, lunch, appetizers, dinner, comfort food (!) and desert.
The recipes include super foods – that is foods that are particularly rich in healthy nutrients.
The book is well illustrated with black and white pictures.

I love the four ingredient cookbook, it makes it so simple and most of the recipes are delicious. I am not vegan but only eat meat when I go out, as a coeliac who is dairy free I find it a real struggle to be completely vegan as most places when we eat out do not cater for me.
However I cook vegan at home and love the different recipes that people have created, I love all cakes and take great pleasure in cooking and eating them!
Types of Vegetarians: not all are vegan
Did you know that there are different types of vegetarians? If you are a vegan yourself, you probably do. However, if you are shopping for someone else, you may not. Here are a few of the distinctions:
- People who eat fish or chicken occasionally, but no other meats, are called Semi-vegetarians.
- The people who eat only fish as a meat along with their fruits and vegetables are known as Pesci-vegetarians.
- A person who eats dairy products and eggs but no meats and fish are Lacto-ovo vegetarians. In the west this is the most common type of vegetarian.
- Indian vegetarians eat no meat, fish and eggs, but they do consume dairy products like cheese and milk.
- When you eat no meat or animal products you are a vegan. This again includes avoiding milk, eggs and fish. Many vegans also try and avoid using leather products.
Most vegetarians don’t consider semi-vegetarians and pesci-vegetarians to be real vegetarians.
